Christmas King

I bought the FQ bundle of the fabric I think in 2018, with the intention of making a king size Christmas quilt for our bed.  Started in February of 2022.  Those that have followed me know I am a one quilt girl.  Start and finish each quilt.  This year had lots of start and stops.  Lots of lessons learned too.

Decided to just cut everyting up into 10 x 2.5 inch strips.  Then I put them into groups of 5 and made blocks.

Put those blocks into rows

Here are two halfs ready to be sewn together.

All together and in need of ironing and then a quilt sandwich.

Decided on a wide backing, didn’t want to mess with any piecing.  Here was my choice, Windham Bedrock in True Red.  I’ve used this backing before in Navy for our Buffalo Plaid King Quilt

and Black for Playroom  for my nephew.

I decided that I wanted it a bit warmer.  I had used wool batting before, but didn’t want to do that again, so decided that it would be two layers of cotton batting.  Sounded great.  When I was ready to do my sandwich, I had painters doing the entire house.  Kind of a pain, but well worth the time.  When my quilt room was emptied for painting, it was the perfect time to layout this quilt for pinning.  I don’t have floor space to do this usually.

You know that I had already decided on straight line quilting echoing each seam.  Thank goodness for my Janome 9400 and it’s 11″throat space.  It was a work out getting that through with just enough clearance to not cause drag.

Quilting completed and labeled.

Time for a wash.  I washed it five times using color catchers each time.  Started the first was with 5 sheets and ended with the last wash 2 sheets that finally came out almost white.

Here are one of my lessons, my binding doesn’t stay flat.  It is terribly wavy.  Not sure if this is due to the two layers of batting or the constant push and pull of this size quilt.  Not sure what the lesson is, because I don’t know what caused the issue.

I am looking forward to putting this on our bed for the holidays!!

Very pretty Christmas quilt. Sorry you had issues with the binding.

Some wideback fabric can have a different shrink ratio than regular quilting cottons. My guess is that the widebacking may have just shrunk differently in the wash but things will likely ease up a bit and lay more flat for you as the quilt gets used. Congratulations for getting the Christmas quilt finished and ready for use this year. I remember this as a goal you have had!

That is so pretty, Jan! The strips are a great way to feature the fun fabrics. I hope the wavy binding works itself out – looks like Yvonne had some good info for you!

That’s one big quilt to do on your domestic machine. Good for you! I think Yvonne may be right…those wide backings are often woven looser (that one is as I have used it before). I bet it all settles down and will look just perfect on your bed. It is such a great quilt! You did use an amazing amount of color catchers! Was there and bleeding on the quilt or did the color catchers do their job and get the excess dye?
