My first few months of quilting took me to the internet to learn. One of the first quilters I found was Sarah at Confessions of a Fabric Addict.
I thought I was signing up for her newsletter. I got a email thanking me for signing up to make quilts for charities. I had no clue what I signed up for, but not one to back down from a challenge, here is a link to my first charity quilt What did I sign up for? Hands2Help
Sarah, is taking a break from Hands 2 Help this year, but Mari @TheAcademicQuilter is helping out this year. There are several charities accepting quilts this year or you can do you own local charity.
This year I decided to use layer cakes. How many of you have a few (ok I have more than a few) layer cakes in your stash?
Pulled out an oldie For You by Brigitte Heitland . This was one of the first of her fabric lines I’d purchased. Then pulled a quick pattern from my pile of patterns to make. Used Jolly Bar Jump from the Fat Quarter Shops Shortcut Quilt Patterns.
Once I had the blocks all made I decided I wanted a square quilt rather than rectangle.
So I will have a bonus table runner from this project.
I learned a long time ago, when doing corners for blocks, to always sew another line.
It will leave you with a pile of HSTs for another use. We’ll see what this can be later.
A few layer cakes leftover for the backing with some light gray from my stash. The usual black and white strip binding.
Some straight line quilting.
And we have the first quilt of 2022 for Hands to Help.
More on the bonus projects later!

So cute, Jan!!! Zen Chic fabrics are so classic!!! Have you decided where it’s going?
Hi jan! What a great use of that layer cake. The recipient will undoubtedly feel all the care and love that you’ve sewn into. I adore that binding choice – who doesn’t love a stripe?! Take care. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne
The quilt looks great and I love how many are made and donated every year. I look forward to seeing what you make with all the extra pieces!
That’s a great design, and so pretty in that fabric! I loved your earlier post about “What did I sign up for?” Good for you for following through!
Wonderful quilt and wonderful story of getting involved with Hands 2 Help! I admire people who keep all the leftovers, I rarely do….but I’ll watch to see what you do with yours.
Great way to use up a Layer Cake fast! What a lovely charity quilt that turned out to be. Great idea to recycle the unused blocks into a table runner! Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss.
OH your quilt and runner are so pretty. That is a great pattern too.
Fantastic use of a layer cake, and what a great finish for Hands2Help! Thanks for linking up!
Thanks for the pattern link to a super quick H2H quilt. LOVE that there’s a bonus table runner, if you go for the square version!!
