I’ve been sewing, but not blogging much lately. So I am getting back to keeping up with my quilting.
The Fat Quarter Shop did a Quilt Along, it was a long 36 weeks, but at times it was a quick 36 weeks. Each block had a pattern for 3″, 6″ and 9″ finished block size. I decided to do the 3″ blocks. This was definitely a challenge for me. Some of the pieces in the blocks were 1″ x 1″, very small and no room for seam allowance issues.
Here is my finished top. I used a Grunge layer cake and rather than try to decide which block should be which color, I just took the next piece of the layer cake. The only thing I did differently was skip a piece if it was in the layer cake twice.
Quilted the top with a simple straight line.
Pulled some binding from scraps and she was done.
Things I learned:
I can do 3.5 inch blocks, although the seams on the back are tough
I’m not a sampler girl
I love grunge fabrics
A clapper helps with flattening seams
36 weeks for a QAL is too long for me
Thanks to the Fat Quarter Shop for a great time. All the block patterns are available here.

WOW!!! I am so impressed! those blocks are so tiny ! you must be a very precise person as this looks SO great!!
I’m totally with you! I am not into 3.5-inch blocks or length quilt-a-longs. But I do enjoy reading posts from those who do. Your finish looks fantastic! Happy stitching! -Andrea
Your quilt looks amazing, and I love your “what I learned” takeaways, too. Sometimes the best lesson you can learn is “this technique/type of project is not for me!” But seriously, great job on your sampler quilt! It’s gorgeous!
I was so impressed watching your progress, and it’s lovely to see it completed. I am also not a sampler quilter, but it does take trying one to really know, doesn’t it?
Great job! I have made a few 3″ blocks and I know seams can be an issue. Your quilt looks fabulous.
I’m with you, it went on way too long for me! Your looks great, love your color choices and layout. I have 5 blocks to go, and will have to assemble and finish later.
It turned out great. I love how you picked fabrics. Nice job getting it finished. It didn’t seem as long a time for me because I got such a late start.
You did great! I love the choices you made…grunge and skipping a fabric if it was in twice. Yes, 36 weeks is long and samplers, are well, samplers….some love em, some don’t! The quilting is perfect. Does it have a home?
Wow! 3.5″ is pretty small and I’m sure a bit fussy to make but the results are fabulous! I am not a sampler girl either! I have tried some but didn’t really enjoy it. I don’t mind the longer QAL’s but I always have a few going at once!
Isn’t it fun to try something different and see what you learn? This turned out really well, Jan. Like you, I’m not as keen about sampler quilts, having done a few now. Those little 3.5″ blocks are their own kind of fun, aren’t they? I understand what you mean about the seam allowances. You know I love Grunge, so I’m glad you’re part of the Grunge gang! Way to go for keeping up with this QAL!
3″ wow! I’m impressed! 36 weeks would feel long to me too but love the result!
