January OMG and February OMG

January OMG and February OMG

I set my January One Monthly Goal with Elm Street Quilts.  Now that I look back it wasn’t a very aggressive goal.  Cut my Buffalo Plaid King quilt out.  There are several great patterns online for this quilt, but I know my limits.  This quilt measures at 115″ x 104″.  Long seams are a challenge for me.  Wavy and wonky would occur.  Decided to go with the basic, sew blocks  into blocks, nest seams and join blocks.

Layed the quilt out in excel to see what I needed.

My January OMG was met early in the month, 389 squares 6″ square cut.  Why did I think I would need a month to cut.  I just needed to get started.

I started checking out if there were any quirky needs for the Robert Kaufman Essex Linen in Midnight.  May be I should have done this before I ordered my fabric.  Several folks said due to the stretch and raveling two seams are best.  Ironing with a tailors clapper is also recommended.  So off we go, double seams ironed and pressed with the clapper.  Good thing I had just ordered my Superior Thread.

I put together pieces for my Kona White and Essex Midnight.

Then my rows of Essex Midnight and Kona Storm.

Put the majority of the blocks together.  Looking pretty cute so far.  Of course a few blocks are easy, no need to worry about the pressing of seams, YET.

Laid the blocks and some rows out on the floor.  The only space I had to do this was the dining room floor, after I moved the table and chairs.

Now this giant is together and another pressing.  When you are moving a quilt top this big around wrinkles follow.

Headed over to my sister’s to sandwich this one.  I have never done a quilt sandwich this big on the floor, can you say aching knees!!!

The sandwich is done and it is now time to start wrestling this King through the machine.  Of course, it is straight line quilting.  Pushing the limit of 4″ between quilting for this Hobbs wool batting.

So I achieved my January OMG.  My February OMG is to get this quilted and bound!!  Then onto the bed and making a few shams.

Wow, great job getting started and piecing the whole top, Jan!!! You picked up some good tricks–double seams and clapper. I recommend the Stripology XL ruler for all cutting in the future.

This is looking just fantastic, Jan! Double seams? I’ve never heard of doing that. Sure will be fun for you to have this one done. It will look great on your bed!

I had never heard of doing double seams either! I’ve used alot of Essex and have yet to have a problem. Interesting tho!

Impressive goal and you did it! I love this plaid. I’ll bet that fabric was a real challenge!

That’s really beautiful! I didn’t know that about the Essex linen needing two seams. I have some I’ve never used, so will have to remember that advice. Congratulations on meeting your goal!

I wondered about using Essex Linen! Love the look of it. Thanks for the tips. Plaid quilts are so cool, I would not be able to baste on the floor! These old knees would rebel!

You made amazing progress this month; I hope that quilting it goes smoothly and you have the quilt on your bed before you know it.

Good job on meeting your goal. Have never double seamed a quilt before. Makes sense if the fabric unravels where cut.

Great finish for the month. The last time I basted a large quilt on the floor, I said “Never again” I rarely do large quilts anymore, but if I do, I quilt them in sections and then sew the quilted pieces together. Have fun quilting it and be sure to show us the finished project.

Before I got my longarm I always did mine on the floor too so yes, I can imagine the achy knees! And I’m not sure where I’d go to do one that big! Congrats on the finish.

I’m imagining how wonderful it will be to sleep under this lovely quilt. Hobbs wool is the best, isn’t it?
