Sewcialites Block 1 – Harmony by Lissa Alexander

The FatQuarter Shop started a Quilt Along called Sewcialites.  It started last Friday and the last block will be posted on June 25, 2021.  They will release a block pattern each Friday.  Each pattern has a 3″, 6″ and 9″ block.  You can pick your choice.  This is a free quilt along.  The blocks are designed by many of my favorite designers.

I’m not sure what I was thinking, but decided to do the 3″ blocks.  I will end up with a 27 1/2″ square wall hanging.

All of the details for the Sewcialites  can be found at the QAL home page.  This page has details on fabric requirements for each block size.  Final quilt layouts.  Coloring sheets.   Links to Facebook groups and videos.

Here are the blocks that will be made and the dates they will be released.

Sewcialites first block is called Harmony.  It was designed by Lissa Alexander.

I’m going to use a layer cake of Grunge, Basic Grey by Moda.  Here I go cutting those tiny pieces.

Kimberly, does a great video each Friday.  She cuts and sews the block and provides great tips for the block.  I should have watched the video before I did my block.

I posted my finished block on Instagram and was glad to hear from Pam, who very kindly said “The corners aren’t all the same direction. Is that on purpose? Nice piecing.”  No Pam it wasn’t on purpose, but I am so glad you told me.    That is one of the benefits of the small 3″ blocks.  It doesn’t take long to tear out a seam.  Not too long later I had it correctly back together.  Although a bit out of shape.  I need to work on that shape.

A few things I learned from Kimberly’s video are:

  • Press all seams open – this will be a change for me, but I will do it (Ordered a Tailors Clapper- hope that helps to flatten)
  • Change stitch length to 1.5 for the small blocks
  • Starch, Starch and Starch

Looking forward to this Friday’s block!!  I think I’ll watch the video first!  If you have any tips for small piecing, please leave me a comment.

I just finished this block last night and, in reality, I wasn’t too pleased with how mine came out. I wanted to make the 3 1/2″ blocks, also, so that I could have a sampler mini. I did not post to Instagram yet, but I probably will. I will take your advice and change to 1.5 stitch length. When are you starching though? I only used starch when my block was complete. I did press my seams open originally, though because of it being such a small block. I had not watched the video either. I think your block looks great. Maybe my blocks will get better if I continue on. Sorry for this long comment. Have a great day!

I love this, and now, you are tempting me. I’ll see how the week goes and whether a squirrel invades my space.

This is such a cute little block! It’s so easy to miss those corner switches, isn’t it? Glad you were able to catch it early, before you had the quilt together!

I love this first block. As you saw I have made both positive and negative blocks. Number 3 will give me a real challenge, I think, with all the HSTs. So fun to see what you make out of it.
