A few friends I met online in the New Quilt Blogger Hop, back a few years, get together via Zoom every few weeks to chat about Quilt things happening. Well, don’t miss those calls, if you do you are given an assignment!!! I was designated to put together our first QAL. It was all in fun, we are a laid back bunch. We threw out some pattern choices and settled on the free pattern Quilty Love – Scrappy Granny Squares.
It is a jelly roll friendly pattern, but I decided on using a layer cake I had hanging around for quite some time.
I try to plan out how to use my fabrics, but never really have too much success. For this quilt, I decided to use the dark green fabric at the top as the center square for each block. They greys on the left will be the outside squares. The colors will be everywhere else in the block with my usual Kona White as the background.
Everything is cut, let the piecing begin.
The blocks go together quickly. I love a block set on point, but it wasn’t as easy to do as I had thought. When it came time to trim the blocks, I had a hot mess. Of course, it wasn’t discovered until after all the blocks were done and trimmed.
I put thing together and if you don’t look closely, you won’t see how the sashing doesn’t quite line up. Sashing was added to finish up the top. Quilting was my wavy line favorite and my striped binding.
Now I have a finished quilt with no home! My friend Wendy at, Pieceful Thoughts, had a post about a charity quilt she did for Freedom Quilt, a quilt that would be given to a person rescued from human trafficking . I checked it out, got the address and this baby is on it’s way.
I may try blocks on point again in the future, just the the short term future.
Linking up with some other fun quilty folks:
This is such a pretty quilt, Jan! The serpentine quilting is perfect, and who doesn’t love a striped binding? ! This will bring much comfort to the recipient. It’s beautiful! And thanks for keeping us on task for the QAL!
Oh I love this quilt!! I made a granny squares quilt years ago using black & white fabrics…I love this one in full color! And the quilting is just perfect 🙂

What a wonderful quilt! Love the quilting and striped binding.
It’s a lovely finish, Jan, and I’m sure the person who receives it will be grateful for it. It made me so happy to hear about the friendships you developed in the hop continuing. 🙂
It finished beautifully, Jan!!! Such pretty colors. And that striped binding is the best! I love that you sent it to Freedom Quilts!
It’s a perfect quilt for Freedom Quilts! How cheerful and uplifting!
Great quilt for a great cause!!
Beautiful finish for a great cause.
Love the combination of scrappy and planned.
Ha ha – I bet you will never miss again! Just kidding – what a great quilt!!
The Granny Square blocks can be finicky to piece. I have tried and felt blah. But I LOVE your quilt. I love how you maintain a cohesiveness using dark green centers and light gray outside squares. The colors are bright and cheerful, the quilting is just perfect and I am sure that this quilt will bring joy and comfort.
Congratulations! The sister that started it all finished it all too! I love the way these are all so different, and think it could be interesting on point. Thanks for leading a successful QAL. Now to figure out which sister is last!
Oh, I don’t see any of those so-called mistakes; for I just see a beautiful quilt overspilling with gorgeous squares of pretty fabrics. Such a beautiful quilt!
