It is time for another Fat Quarter Shop Quilt Along, this one is Layer Cake Custard and is from the Shortcut Quilt Series. I picked Harmony by Sweetwater for Moda.
This line had caught my eye, I loved the colors and prints together. I splurged and bought the wide backing to finish off this quilt. You know there will be a store later about that wide backing and how easy it is to use for the backing.
This pattern is very quick to go together. Starting with a layer cake and a background fabric. Ok, I used my usual background Kona White, can’t go wrong with that choice, it always matches. There are two blocks that make up the quilt, the cake block and the custard block.
Once I had all the blocks together, it was time to get out my wide backing and put together my quilt sandwich. I told you there would be a story about the wide backing and how things worked out. I’m not quilting in my normal space (remember we are in transition to a new house in February, 2019). This is my first quilt putting together here on a small table rather than the big counter. So I thought it would be helpful to just cut the extra off the wide backing so it would be easier to put together. Wait for it, I cut the wide backing perfectly in half. I could only laugh! So I was off to piece my backing together, once that was done the sandwich went together fairly quickly.
I was scheduled for shoulder surgery in 8 days and figured that would be plenty of time to get this quilted. I started off with my first straight line (you guessed that right I’ll be doing straight line quilting) and my walking foot wasn’t happy. Ripped that out monkeyed with the foot and tried again. Not happening. Rather than getting frustrated I called my long armer to see if she could get me into her schedule. No problem headed over and dropped her off.
I had my surgery, good news not as big of a problem as expected. Should be 8-10 weeks of PT and recovery. Just after my surgery we lost my sister-in-law after a long struggle with several medical conditions. We were out of town so I had my sister pick up the quilt. Took a few shots in the small bit of sun we had over the last few weeks. Then we headed out of town for some rest and relaxation, traveled the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, which is such beautiful country.
Now it is time to post the quilt and share the result of some bumps in the road.
Be sure to head over to the Fat Quarter Shop and see more of the Layer Cake Custard Quilt.
I am glad that your shoulder surgery went so well and that the recovery time is shorter than anticipated. I am also sorry to hear about your sister-in-law. This quilt seems to be about perseverance. I hope your walking foot and machine start being in harmony again soon, and thanks for sharing. I think you did very well in your transition space!
In spite of a lot of problems and sadness, you ended up with a beautiful quilt!
Jan, what a wnderful quilt! I am so sorry about your sister-in-law.. None of these losses are easy….. I am glad your recuperation will be swift and pleased to see you sewing. I do love your fabric choices!
Your quilt is yummy and I love the fabric you chose–you can’t go wrong with Sweetwater. I’m glad you are on the mend and sorry to hear about your loss. You are going through a lot right now with waiting to move to your new house and glad you are still able to sew. Can’t believe your sewing machine was acting up and to me it seems like that always happen when you have an important deadline. You did this QAL proud-going to check out the other ones. BTW, I do love cakes with custard filling.
Your quilt is absolutely beautiful! Hope you heal quickly.
So glad I finally get to see this! (I’m still waiting on the release of my FQS short cut (fingers drumming). We could put our two quilts together, since we both used Harmony. Love that fabric line, so fresh and pretty! Your quilt turned out beautifully!
Beautiful quilt, Jan! I love that backing. Yes, we’ve all done something crazy. In the end it makes the quilt’s story richer. My sympathy about your SIL.
GORGEOUS!!! It is a simple pattern that makes a striking quilt. It is absolutely clear that cake and custard belong together. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Sending lots of hugs and warm wishes!!!
